SENATOR CHRIS SMITH FILES LEGISLATION TO BOOST CHILD SAFETY IN AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

TALLAHASSEE – New legislation designed to increase protections for children in Florida’s after-school programs such as Boys and Girls Clubs has been filed by state Senator Chris Smith (D-Ft. Lauderdale) for the 2015 Legislative Session.

Sponsored in the House by Rep. Ray Pilon (R-Sarasota), the measure would require all after school care providers to have a Level 2 background screen for all employees. Currently, under the state’s Child Care Licensing Statute, some programs are exempt from government licensing requirements, and are therefore not required to have a Level 2 background screening. This legislation will close that loop-hole and ensure that all individuals who are facilitating after school programs are Level 2 background-screened.
